How to Prepare Your Utah Roof for Winter

Get your Utah roof ready before the first snow. Ice dams, snow loads, gutters, and ventilation — everything Utah homeowners need to do this fall.

Utah winters are hard on roofs. Ice dams, heavy snow loads, and freeze-thaw cycles can turn a $400 repair into a $15,000 water damage claim. Here's what to do before the first snow.

1. Get a Fall Roof Inspection

October is the ideal time. A thorough inspection checks for cracked or missing shingles, compromised flashing, deteriorated caulking, and signs of water intrusion in the attic. Small repairs now prevent large emergencies in February.

2. Clean Your Gutters

Clogged gutters are the leading cause of ice dams. When debris blocks water flow, it backs up under shingles, freezes, and expands — forcing water into your home. Clean gutters before the first hard freeze.

3. Understand Ice Dams

Ice dams form when heat from your living space escapes through the attic, warms the roof surface, and melts snow. Meltwater runs to the cold eaves and refreezes. The fix is usually an insulation and ventilation problem — not a roofing problem. We assess both on every inspection.

4. Check Attic Ventilation

Proper ventilation keeps the roof at outside temperature, preventing ice dam formation and extending shingle life. Signs of poor ventilation: large icicles, attic frost in winter, excessive summer heat, or premature shingle aging.
